Deep in the Sierra Madre mountains south of Puerto Vallarta lies one of the region’s most breathtaking natural treasures — the Mismaloya Waterfalls. Known for their series of cascading pools, jungle scenery, and crystal-clear swimming holes, these falls remain one of Vallarta’s best-kept secrets.
But getting there isn’t as simple as following a road — it’s an adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or an adventurous traveler looking to go off the beaten path, here’s everything you need to know before you go.
🚗 How to Get There
The waterfalls are located about 11 km south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, hidden deep in the jungle between Mismaloya and Las Juntas y Los Veranos.
While many travelers start from Mismaloya, the most accessible and efficient route begins in Las Juntas y Los Veranos, a small mountain town about 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta.
From there, we ride in a pickup truck along a scenic mountain road to the trail start — this saves about an hour of steep hiking and allows you to begin the adventure with fresh energy. (You can walk the extra stretch if you prefer, but it’s a long uphill start!)
🥾 The Hike
From the trailhead, the hike to the first waterfall is roughly 3 miles (1 hour and 45 minutes) on a moderate trail that winds through lush jungle canyons. You’ll cross rivers, climb a few steep hills, and likely get your feet wet along the way — so wear shoes you don’t mind soaking!
At the first waterfall, you can swim in the refreshing natural pool surrounded by greenery and jungle sounds. From there, it’s about 15 more minutes upstream to reach the main series of cascading waterfalls — a collection of smaller drops and pools perfect for relaxing, exploring, and taking photos.
🧗 Alternate Route from Mismaloya
You can also reach these waterfalls from Mismaloya, but this route is much longer and more difficult — about 4 hours each way and involves significant elevation changes and steep climbs.
This path is best suited for experienced hikers in excellent physical condition, but it offers some of the most scenic mountain views in the region. The trail winds through untouched jungle and over ridges with panoramic views of Banderas Bay and Puerto Vallarta.
For those with strong fitness, our advanced full-day tour starts in Las Juntas y Los Veranos and ends in Mismaloya, giving you the best of both worlds — waterfalls, jungle, and breathtaking views from above.
💰 Entrance Fee
There is a small entrance fee of 100 pesos per person, collected by a worker from the Ejido of Las Juntas y Los Veranos (the local community that maintains the area). This helps preserve the trails and supports the local landowners.

🏞️ What to Bring
Be prepared for a real jungle adventure. Here’s what we recommend you bring:
- Comfortable hiking shoes (they will get wet)
- Light, breathable clothing
- Swimsuit (optional, but highly recommended!)
- Towel and change of clothes
- Insect repellent and sunscreen
- 2–3 liters of water per person
- Snacks or a light breakfast before the hike
- Waterproof bag for phones and electronics
- Good fitness and a sense of adventure!
📅 Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit the Mismaloya Waterfalls is during the dry season (November–April), when the trails are firm, river levels are safe, and the weather is cooler.
During the rainy season (June–October), the waterfalls are at their most powerful — but trails can be muddy and river crossings more challenging.
Start your hike early in the morning for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
